Volunteer Services
The roots of our agency are grounded in the hard work of our founding members who volunteered their time to create a place for families to gather together to support and nurture their children.
Today, our volunteers continue to provide an invaluable service to Community Living. They contribute to the agency in a number of ways. Some volunteers lend their support in group settings, such as at our day activities sites, while others are involved in a one-to-one relationship.
Others choose to get involved with our agency committees and fundraising activities.
All our volunteers participate in a screening process that includes interviews, a criminal reference check and personal references. Our volunteers enjoy the benefits of all the training opportunities Community Living has available including First Aid & CPR, Effective Communication and Safeguards.

Get involved with Community Living Durham North's Board of Directors
Community Living Durham North empowers people with intellectual disabilities to live, learn, work and participate in their community.
Community Living Durham North is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. It typically includes a couple of family members, at least one self-advocate, and 10 or 12 other interested and motivated members of our local communities – i.e., Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge and beyond.
Board members are elected to a two-year term and are expected to attend eight to ten Board meetings per year. All Board members are also expected to sit on a Board committee as needed with a further commitment of four to six meetings per year. We have adopted a hybrid meeting format; meetings do take place in our Boardroom, but individual members can join via Zoom when that is more convenient.
The Board has a strong management team of paid staff in place. Our job is to provide the governance function and ensure that their work continues to advance the strategic objectives of the organization. We also ensure that a comprehensive set of policies are in place to make clear what paid staff can and cannot do.
Particular skill sets (finance, technology, law) are always welcome but we are chiefly looking for those who have a genuine interest in our work and would like to help improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Ideally, you will live or work in the north part of Durham Region. Previous Board experience would be an asset. Also, we strongly encourage applicants from diverse communities to apply.
